When I was a teenager, I read a comic strip. I don't quite remember which comic strip it was but I remember the joke:
Girl 1: "I need more meaning in my life. I want to be a tool for God. Like a spatula."
Girl 2: "You've been lying on this couch and staring at the ceiling for the last five hours."
Girl 1: "Is it my fault God rarely needs a spatula?"
I can't tell you how many times I've sat and pondered just what God has in store for my life. I know I'm supposed to be doing something to further his Kingdom, but exactly what that is going to look like in the coming years, I have no idea.
For the longest time, I just sat and waited. Waited for the day God would say, "Here you go, do this."
What a bunch of wasted time! Whatever God's plan for me in the future, while I'm waiting for the big things to happen, I realized that I shouldn't just sit and do nothing! I need to get moving and do something positive!
This is The Back Row. It's almost a year and a half old and it has produced a lot of content and sparked a lot of conversation. God has blessed it with tremendous growth in a short time.
But do I know that this is what God is going to have me do for the rest of my life? Or for the next 10 years? Or for the next six months?
No. I have no clue. All I know is that until God tells me otherwise, I'm going to do my best to encourage those who struggle with this ministry and praise God for the opportunity.
The truth is, most of us may never be used in some grand and amazing way by God, at least, not how we think. God likes to move in the background, to stir up souls, to live in the unseen.
So, for me to say that writing for The Back Row or serving at Celebrate Recovery are just things I'm doing until God shows me what he wants me to do, that's wrong. The fact is God is already using me because I'm willing to be used.
If you are open to God's leading, God will use you, even if it is just in little ways. The fact is, when we live for God, in whatever we do, we further the Kingdom.
For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Philippians 3:13
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17
All this to say, don't wait around. Do something! Start a Bible study, volunteer at church, serve others, but don't do it for yourself, do it because you love God and because God loves you. That is your purpose here. That is God's plan for your life. And as you go, he will open the doors. God doesn't bring open doors to you, you have to go out and discover them.
Don't wait around for God to reveal His master plan for your life, because that's just not how it works. You'll wind up wasting a lot of time and missing opportunities to grow yourself and the Kingdom.
So... what are you waiting for?
