Many times I just sit and think about how God has changed my life and how grateful I should be. The day I surrendered my life to Christ, I was not a young child or kid listening to a sermon in church but instead, I was at the lowest point I’d ever been in as an adult. That day I remember all too well. I had been incarcerated, going on two weeks, and I was facing many charges. I had burned the majority of my bridges and, as I look back, I remember clearly that there was no hope in sight. One morning, my cell mate asked me if I wanted to go to church. I was hesitant at first but I accepted the offer. The very next morning, I surrendered my life to Christ in an 8’ x 10’ concrete jail cell. If only I could remember my cell mate's name, I would like to thank him for the life changing invitation.
It has been 9 years and 7 months since I made my profession of faith. Along this road I have learned that I need someone to nudge me in the right direction from time to time just as my cell mate did. In Celebrate Recovery we constantly encourage people to find an accountability partner or sponsor, someone to talk to for guidance and encouragement.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 tells us, “Two are better than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. But if someone is alone there is no one to help him, two men can resist an attack that would defeat one man alone.”
Life will throw us blows, some we will be able to absorb and some will knock us to the ground. For me it is very important that I have someone in my corner to help me up. I thank God for the relationships He has given me and the friends He has put in my life. If you are down and out, pick up that phone and call someone who cares.
