One of the things I struggle with is being anxious and worrying about things. I know that Jesus provides, but it is difficult to fully trust Him with everything. Matthew 6:31-33 notes what Jesus said about anxiety: “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
We are to concern ourselves with seeking the kingdom of God; not about things that need not be worried about. As followers of Jesus, we should be concerned about spreading the Gospel, not about daily things. While it is true that we go through hard times, Paul instructs us in Philippians 4:6-7: “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Although these verses are often quoted, it is comforting to know that we can give our burdens and anxieties over to God and He will give us peace.
Psalm 46:1-3 says “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” Further, Psalm 55:22 says “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
God is in control. He provides us with comfort in knowing we can give our burdens to him. Even if our world falls apart, we can trust in Jesus to provide comfort and peace.
God knows our needs better than we do. If we think we “need” something, God does not just give it to us because we think we “need” it. We may actually not need it or need to not have it. God is the Creator of the universe. He knows everything. He orchestrates everything. Everything happens because of the sovereign hand of God.
How comforting is it to know that someone already has our life planned out for us and knows exactly what He is doing? I admit that it is difficult for me to fully trust God with everything. Although it is hard, it is necessary to do. It may be hard in the process, but the reward is that our full trust is in the Lord Jesus Christ and He will provide all of our needs (whether we see it as a need or not).
